A recent, weekend trip to Troy, Ohio resulted in a whole lot of fun and a bucket full of memories. When you think of the term ‘wild’, do you associate it with a wild animal, something adventurous, or a new way of looking at something? Well, Troy has your variation covered in all three ways.

Idle Hour Ranch
Wild animals are typically thought of being found in a zoo if they aren’t in their natural habitat. Idle Hour Ranch is more of a country farm, but with far more animals to interact with than just potbelly pigs. You will find kangaroos, tortoises, goats, camels, emus and a Patagonian cavy to name a few.
Almost 20 years ago, the current owners offered to tend to the animals that had been acquired for their church’s live nativity scene. After several months of feeding the animals, they decided to open as a petting zoo to offset the costs. Over time, the animal selection grew, and grew, and GREW. Now, animal lovers come from all over to ride camels, feed the goats and pet the joey.
Camels, Sloths and More
Yep, you read that correctly. You can really ride on a camel. You can ride by yourself or with a partner on a single humped camel. The best part is the hilarious posing that takes place at the end. Truly a trained professional showing off his best side. It’s a tough act to follow. Pony rides are available for small children.
Did you know sloths move so slowly that moss grows on their fur? A few years ago, my husband and I traveled to Costa Rica and we got to see our first sloth. It was waaayyyy up in the rainforest treetops, curled up in a tight ball. Much to our disappointment, it stayed that way the entire morning. It was cool to see, but not very exciting.
Fast forward to this summer in Troy, Ohio. I got to see a sloth from about two feet away and in full action. Who would have guessed that such an opportunity would be available here in the Midwest? If you really love sloths, Idle Hour Ranch offers a private, full encounter with these big-eyed animals.
Tips When Visiting Idle Hour Ranch
My number one piece of advice: buy the big bucket of food to feed the animals. It goes quickly and there are so many animals to feed you don’t want to miss any.
During the fall, IHR opens their thematic corn field maze. This is a favorite, midwestern seasonal activity. If you haven’t been through a corn maze, add it to your bucket list. If you have been to one, you’ll know how fun a new one can be to master. Be sure to bring a flashlight. Gem mining is also offered. I was so impressed with how many treasures were in the sand bag. A very educational souvenir from our visit.

Float Troy
So you’ve played with wild animals throughout the day and now you’re in need of a place to stay for the night. You can have a ‘wild’ adventure on the Miami River by camping in one of the tethered, floating tents. Unique to Troy, these locally patented tents are located at the Treasure Island Park.
A kayak, your life jackets, and a floating fire pit are all included in your reservation. I would suggest bringing a padded mat as well as your sleeping bag and pillow for a more restful night’s sleep. The tent is inflated, but the floor of the tent is a sturdy rubber.
To make the most of your visit, you can take your kayak up and down the river. Be sure to bring your favorite fishing pole because there are nice little fishing spots if you so desire. At night, the city lights come on and the illuminated bridge and courthouse are absolutely stunning in the distance.

Moeller Brew Barn
One of my favorite personality traits is seeing someone think outside the box. The owners of Moeller Brew Barn did just that when they converted an old church into a brewery. What I love is how they kept the original architecture and seamlessly blended it with their new age micro-brewing equipment and style. You’ll walk in and say, ‘this is wild.’
A large group can converse, eat, and drink upstairs in the choir loft overlooking the bar and patrons. Outside, you’ll find picnic tables, live music and a silo that has been converted into a service bar. Inside or out, it’s a great atmosphere. A full menu is offered along with an everchanging line of craft beers. Add in a few board games from their wide selection, or bring a deck of cards, and you have a fun filled evening all in place.

So, do you choose all three ‘wilds’ or do one or two stand out as being a favorite? All three make for a lot of laughs and great memories. If you want even more ideas for things to do and experience in the Troy, Ohio area, read my article here on Miami County.
