The Walk Café and Bakery

I love collecting personalized coffee cup sleeves

Entering in I could sense that this was no ordinary coffee shop. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at first. The signs of encouragement? The friendly staff who were eager to please? The actual verbal conversations between the multiple patrons? I had to find out and I’m so glad I did.

Relaxing and inviting

While waiting to talk with one of the employees, I was intrigued by all of the small details The Walk had incorporated into their setting, keeping their patrons in mind: the cozy reading corner with comfy seating and a blanket, table height outlets at all of the tables lined up along the wall, a checkerboard right on the table top to encourage lingering. The details along with my delicious drink and food provided the perfect setting for creative writing production.

Checkers: A game for all ages

I had the pleasure of getting to hear the story of this non-profit, cafe’s beginning from the manager who lives and breathes the essence of what this place stands for. He explained how six Mennonite churches came together to create a haven in this neighborhood. It’s more than just a cup of coffee. It’s an environment that beckons you to sit and stay awhile, getting to know a friend or maybe even a stranger. Great ideas, bonding and overall good vibes have come from sharing a soothing warm beverage. This beloved meeting place allows the churches to truly see and hear about the needs of the community and to be able to help accordingly. I think it’s a beautiful business plan that every community could reproduce.

The wall speaks volumes

The staff is composed of full time, paid employees and also volunteers, some coming from other states. Volunteers who commit to staying for at least a year are provided with housing, free meals and a small stipen. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, contact the café directly.

The Walk is located at 1329 Maysville Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701

I love a cafe with a mission! Have you visited a place that leans in that direction as well? Please share so we can all support them in their endevour.

Many passions fill my life but my family, friends and travel top the list by far. Combining them, or at least two of the three, makes it even better! I love being home and working in my garden but the urge to see and experience something new is always bubbling to the top. I love the researching part of planning a trip almost as much as the actual experience. I also like the challenge of seeing what kind of deals I can get so money is left over for even more trips!
