We are all aware of the benefits when we shop local. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to put that practice to work. As we go through these uncertain times, shopping local and supporting our hometown businesses has never been so important.
Mother’s Day is a great time to reflect upon all the ways your mom has made a positive impact on your life. It’s a day to show special appreciation for all she has done and continues to do on a day to day basis.
When thinking of the perfect gift, consider what is special in her life (besides you of course!). This can be something she enjoys on a daily basis or something that you know she’d like, but would never splurge and get it herself. Either scenario lends itself to a great gift of appreciation.
Let’s get started!

Morning Coffee
A cup of freshly ground coffee beans can be the perfect way to kickstart the day. If your mom does not have a grinder, you can order one here. Coffee beans are not grown in Ohio, but local roasters and coffee bean vendors can be supported.
L-City Pop Up Coffee sells bags of coffee beans and freshly ground coffee. The beans are roasted in Laurelville, which is just south of Lancaster.
The Well on S. Broad St in Lancaster has also started selling their bags of coffee beans. They also provide delicious snacks such as their Buckeye Bars to go with the coffee, as well as locally harvested honey.
Treat Her With Flowers
The scent of fresh flowers, along with their beauty, can make a positive difference in any person’s day. I’d be pretty hard to find very many moms who wouldn’t love to be given a flower delivery subscription throughout the summer. What a great treat to look forward to and enjoy. Bramble Run Farms, in Amanda, offers subscriptions of varying lengths and delivery is included. I’ve gotten their bouquets before and they are absolutely stunning.
Something Special for the Kitchen
Cooking is a big part of most moms’ lives. Having really good gear in the kitchen can make a world of a difference. Get your mom a top of the line, handmade steel skillet made right here in Logan at Lockhart Ironworks. You can watch the entire, amazing process here on YouTube. These skillets function a lot like cast iron but better. They heat faster and distribute the heat quicker; the handle is riveted so the heat doesn’t transfer, unlike wielded handles. They are significantly lighter and aesthetically beautiful as they acquire a black patina finish over time.

Unique and Memorable Jewelry
Blissful Moon Designs (can be found on FaceBook) will custom make a special piece of jewelry to fit your mom’s interest. Is there an heirloom brooch, single earring or watch that is no longer being used but too sentimental to toss? Have it transformed into a pendant that can be worn and enjoyed. BMD is offering 35% off any custom pendant for Mother’s Day. She also offers premade jewelry which can be viewed here. All orders can be shipped.
Yummy Treats
Chocolate dipped strawberries, beautiful mint trays, and even a plate of buckeyes may be just the thing to satisfy your mom’s sweet tooth. Candy Cottage has all of these things and more available for curbside pickup. Call ahead to place your order.

Adult Beverages
Whether your mom prefers an evening glass of wine or a frothy mug of beer, this region has something for either palette. The wineries and breweries are open for take out only but that’s all you need to purchase a bottle, flight or growler. You may know your mom’s favorite, but if not, here are a few locally owned businesses to choose from.
Gift Certificates
As always, gift certificates are available from many businesses. They provide current income for the owners and it gives your mom something to look forward to once things start opening up again. Restaurants, massages, and salons are all great options. Some can be purchased in person, others can be obtained online.

My challenge for you is to think locally when buying your Mother’s Day gift. Yes, Amazon is easy but the benefits are limited. Did you know that when you buy locally, 70-80% of your dollar stays in the town? We’re all in this together, so we might as well make the best of it.
Happy shopping!
I read this article the Saturday before Mother’s Day, and I told the family to get in the car! We had a lovely drive out to Bramble Run Farms in Amanda. I picked up a beautiful bouquet of flowers and gave them to my mother on Sunday, Mother’s Day. She absolutely loved them! Thanks for the tip 🙂
That’s awesome! ‘Grown here, not flown here’ makes a big impact on our community and environment. Thanks for supporting local and for sharing your experience. Love it!!
