Enjoy a Flight at Home

pizza flight

Your flight(s) may have been cancelled, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a flight at home. Are you thinking the pandemic is starting to affect me mentally?  Haha Nope! I’m just thinking outside the box. Let your palette have fun while trying your favorite snack or drink by providing a flight.

You may have enjoyed a flight of wine or beer at your favorite winery or brewery. If not, and you’re still confused, let me explain before we go any further. A flight is a sampling of drinks. Usually 3 – 5 varieties are poured into small glasses. It’s a great way to sample the goods before ordering a bottle. It also is a great opportunity to try different specially made drinks without having to order one of each.

Well, why limit yourself to just wine and beer? We had fun and did this with a variety of mediums. Once you start thinking about it, I’m sure your wheels and imagination will go into overdrive just like mine.

Wine Flights

Hanging out at a local winery can be a very relaxing, beautiful experience, especially when the evening’s weather is just right. Most wineries offer flights so you can sample their different varieties. Hosting your own wine tasting at home can be just as easy. I’m all about supporting local businesses, so I like to have a few bottles on hand from various local wineries.

Here are some local wineries near Lancaster, Ohio. You can stop in and pick up a bottle and support the local businesses.

Wine is great on its own, but you will probably want to have some cheese and crackers on hand as well. These help to cleanse your palette before trying the next glass. Hosting a wine flight can be as simple or as extravagant as you’d like. Wine flight glasses make it a bit more fun. You can even tap into your travel bug and have French, German or Italian wines to compare. Here are 20 Ways to Host a Wine Tasting Party.

Beer Flight

With craft beer becoming so popular, hosting a beer flight party is a snap. You can now get locally brewed craft beers sold in variety packs. This allows you to try 4-6 different beers without having to commit to one specific flavor. By pouring a sample of each beer into small glasses, everyone in attendance will get to try various beers.

The more kinds you offer, the easier it is to get them mixed up. Providing asheet of paper with each flavor’s information on it can be really helpful. You can find one to print off here.

Ice Cream Flight

While shopping one day, I came up with the idea of trying different ice creams made here in Ohio since we couldn’t visit the destinations in person. I wanted to be able to compare quality, flavor and texture as fairly as possible, so I bought four different brands all in the same flavor. I opted for our flight to be Cookies ‘n Crème, but you could go as simple as vanilla or chocolate. Not all brands make the same flavors, so it was a bit trickier than I had thought.

Four scoops per bowl made for a simple flight. We ate them one at a time so we could keep them all straight. If you had little bowls for each person that would be ideal. We scored each one and marked it appropriately. Some things to consider: texture, flavor, amount of chunks (cookies, peanuts, caramel…), creaminess.

This ended up being a bit of a geography lesson as well. We looked up where each quart of ice cream came from on the back and found it on the map. Maybe one of these days we’ll actually get to the creamery where they are made. What’s your favorite regional brand of ice cream?

Our flight of Ice cream consisted of four brands of Cookies ‘n Cream

Soda/Pop Flight

You could have a flight of pop every night of the week if this is your desire. There are always at least two major brands and then a store brand. An example would be Dr. Pepper, Mr. Pibb and a store brand. Ginger Ale, Root beer, and 7up are all good ones to start with. If you live near a soda emporium store, such as Rocket Fizz, you’ve hit jackpot.

We do not live near such a place, so we are limited to what the local grocery store carries. Root Beer was our choice for the night: A&W, Barq’s and Big K. We poured each variety into a separate glass and were pleasantly surprised at the differences. One definitely had more of the sassafras flavoring versus the others, but I won’t ruin the results.

Pizza Flights

Growing up in a family who owned pizza shops, we rarely went out to other pizzarias. Plus, no other pizza ever tasted as good. (yes, I was biased) Once I moved away, I came to enjoy trying different pizzas all over the world. The grossest pizza I’ve ever eaten had kangaroo as a topping. Checked off and not eating that again. It’s interesting to see how pizza is cooked and served in different regions. Take for instance, Italy. They serve their pizza with black olives that still have their pits in them. Let’s just say our first bite was a shocker. Fortunately, no one chipped a tooth from that lesson. Other interesting pizzas have included toppings such as French fries, alligator and mac ‘n cheese. Personally, Chicago’s deep dish pizza tops my list of favorites.

Our city of Lancaster provides so many pizza options. They are all relatively the same, yet each has a distinct flavor and specialty. For our pizza flight we ordered a pepperoni pizza from three different pizza shops to make the comparison relatively close. The easiest way for us to tell them apart on our plate was by the amount of pepperoni heaped on top. It was a delicious competition and, although we had a majority winner, our family had distinct rankings. What is your favorite pizza, either restaurant or topping?

What’s Next?

See how this can be so addicting? My son did mention that we weren’t doing very well in the nutrition department, and I do have to agree. I offered to do an apple flight, but he declined. Maybe this fall. There are so many foods and drinks to choose from; the possibilities are endless. Have fun with the idea and please share some of the flights you come up with by commenting below.

Many passions fill my life but my family, friends and travel top the list by far. Combining them, or at least two of the three, makes it even better! I love being home and working in my garden but the urge to see and experience something new is always bubbling to the top. I love the researching part of planning a trip almost as much as the actual experience. I also like the challenge of seeing what kind of deals I can get so money is left over for even more trips!

  1. Hi Jodi, I did not realize Landcaster was big enough to have such varieties. I love your creativity and flight idea! I have to ask, did the ice creams taste different? I think a coffee flight would be fun too!

    1. I’m glad you like it! There was quite a difference in the ice cream brands. Some did not have large chunks of cookies and some had a smoother flavor than others. I had thought about the coffee flight as well and forgot to add it! Thanks for the reminder.
