August has arrived and sunflower fields in Ohio are bursting with color. Some farms are blooming a bit earlier than expected, so I wanted to create this post for as much up to date information as possible. I’ll add to it as various fields reach their peak bloom.
Honestly, I’ve never been much of a sunflower lover. We’ve grown the Mammoth varieties and entered them in the local county fair, but I’ve not had a desire for bouquets to be sitting around my house. Visiting the sunflower fields in Ohio has changed that! I think it was a combination of seeing the massive amount of blooms all at the same time as well as seeing the different varieties. I had no idea there were pink sunflowers. Add to that the personality of some of the blooms and you’ve got a full recipe for sunflower love.
Varieties of Sunflowers
There are over123455678 kinds of sunflowers. Who knew? Their size ranges from dkfdk to dkmfd. Mammoth sunflowers are what you see at the fair and their individual flower head can get 3435490” in diameter. Sunflower colors can include various shades of yellow from an almost white to a deep mustardy color. They also can be on the red spectrum ranging from pink all the way to maroon.
Smeck Historical Park
Smeck Park is one of Fairfield County’s great county parks. They have planted a plot of sunflowers near the entrance. It’s not a gigantic amount but definitely enough for a the Ahhh effect and great pictures. The sunflowers are all about 5-6 foot tall, if you plan to photograph children, you may want to bring something for both you and them to stand on to create height. When you walk in, to the left, there is a small cove that has been created so you can get great shots of being immersed in the flowers.
Along with the sunflower field, the park has a large playground, a pond, a nice walking trail, a windmill watertower (very unusual), a log cabin home and a banked barn. It’s quite a nice place to spend your summer day.

The Patch on 37
Acres and acres of blooming happiness greet you as you walk through the admission gate. This is a great destination if you are in search of sunflowers in Ohio. 26 varieties have been planted with 25 of them in bloom at the time of this writing. The different varieties are intermingled with each other, so you always have the opportunity to spot a new one.
Large paths between the different plots allow for ample room for everyone. You can look out over the patches and see the sprawling beauty as well as walk up an overlook bridge. One of my favorite aspects of the farm is all of the props they have strategically placed around the edges of the patches. Two old tractors, an old green truck, two rope swings, a huge chair, a split rail fence and various crates give you added destinations for sunflower photographs.
Admission is $10 on the weekdays and $15 on the weekends. With admission, you get to cut one sunflower stem of your choosing. Weekend rates are slightly higher because the farm offers live music, wagon rides and food tents. If you want a bouquet of these beauties, you can purchase a glass jar for $15 which holds 20-25 stems or a large bucket for $25 which holds 40-45 stems. Be sure to bring your own cutters.
